EU project in Western Balkans | How to become a YEA

What is the YEA network?

The Young European Ambassadors (YEA) platform is a creative network of future young game changers from across the Western Balkans (Albania, Bosnia- Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Serbia) and the European Union (EU).

Although YEAs come from different backgrounds, all of them share an interest in learning about the EU’s values, and to promote the opportunities that the EU offers. Most importantly, YEAs are open to sharing ideas and developing their talents – towards inspiring change within their communities, the Western Balkans region, and across the EU.

Who are we looking for?

Every year, we will be looking for dynamic young individuals from various backgrounds, who will become leaders within their communities towards inspiring change across the Western Balkan region and the EU. You don’t need to know much about the EU before you apply, but you should be ready to learn, and to invest your time and talents.

Devoted to the arts and culture? Love sport and how it bridges cultural divides? Or maybe you are committed to protecting the environment? Whatever your passion, if you have an inspiring message to share – the Young European Ambassadors network is looking for you!

Make sure you first satisfy the criteria listed in the FAQs and follow the news on our channels for new Calls for Applications! Read Terms and Conditions

Selection process

The selection process consists of four phases. Full details are available in our Terms & Conditions

Phase 1

Call for Applications

Date for 2021 to be announced

  • Carefully read the Criteria, and the Terms & Conditions of the Young European Ambassadors network.
  • Complete the Application Form along with a 1-minute video (which can easily be done on your phone) explaining why you want to become a Young European Ambassador.
Your video should explain, in your own words (remember English is the official language of the project), what makes you the best choice for the Young European Ambassador network. Videos that do not provide an answer to the main question, will be automatically excluded from the Voting process.

Phase 2

Open Online Voting

Date for 2021 to be announced

  • After the closing date, the YEA project team will screen all entries for basic eligibility*.
  • All valid applications will then be publicly published on the ONLINE VOTING PLATFORM.
  • The YEA project team will promote the voting platform, and YEA applicants are invited to generate votes among their peers and followers in order to maximise their chances.
  • Shortlisted candidates receiving the most votes will continue to Phase 3 – the Jury's final selection process.
  • *The YEA project team has sole discretion to determine an entry’s eligibility. Any entry that does not comply with the formal requirements, contains offensive content, or is otherwise objectionable, will be disqualified.

Phase 3

Jury’s Final Selection

Date for 2021 to be announced

  • The YEA Jury is comprised of influential individuals from across the Western Balkans who are active in areas such as media, arts and culture, civic activism, and beyond.
  • The Jury’s Vote will be live streamed in real-time on the YEA website.
  • Each member of the Jury will select:
    • The top 5 Ambassadors from each country
    • The top 5 Attachés from each country

For more information on the selection process consult our Terms and conditions

Jury Evaluation Criteria

  • When ranking applicants, the Jury evaluate candidates on their Application Forms and videos. They will be looking for, above all, enthusiasm and creativity, leadership potential and good communication skills.
  • Based on the calculation of votes, 5 ambassadors and 5 attachés from each country – 60 in total – will be selected as members of the YEA network for a period of three years.

* The Young European Ambassadors initiative is committed to diversity and attracting candidates from all backgrounds. In particular, this means reaching out to those who may not have had much, if any, opportunity to engage in EU projects or travel to the EU for educational purposes before.

For details on Jury Evaluation please see the Terms and conditions section.

Once you become a YEA

The 60 selected members of the YEA Network are introduced to each other during an orientation session, where they receive an informative welcome pack, along with a plan and programme detailing their participation in kick-off events.

All YEAs must sign a Volunteer Agreement setting out expectations, roles, and responsibilities.
