Clean Business North Macedonia – Mobilising SMEs as Champions Against Corruption

Project Description

'Clean Business North Macedonia – Mobilising SMEs as Champions Against Corruption' is a national initiative designed to strengthen the integrity, competitiveness, and long‑term resilience of small and medium‑sized enterprises. The project focuses particularly on medium‑sized companies, which are key drivers of economic growth. However, they are also disproportionately affected by corruption risks, regulatory complexity, and limited internal compliance capacities. Through a structured set of activities, the project equips companies with the knowledge, tools, and systems necessary to adopt modern integrity standards aligned with national regulations and EU expectations.

The project establishes the Clean Business Alliance, a multi‑stakeholder platform uniting SMEs, business associations, chambers, and public institutions, including the State Commission for the Prevention of Corruption (SCPC). Companies benefit from targeted training, an Anti‑Corruption Officer programme, advisory clinics, ready‑to‑use policy toolkits, and access to the Clean Business Hub, a primary resource centre and reporting platform. Participating SMEs may progress toward a Clean Business Medal certification, demonstrating compliance and enhancing their market credibility.
Specific Objective

• Empower SMEs to implement integrity standards, compliance mechanisms, and ethical business practices.
• Reduce corruption risks in procurement, operations, and governance.
• Enhance cooperation between SMEs, state institutions, civil society, academia, and media.
• Support alignment with EU transparency, compliance, and anti-corruption standards.
Expected Results

• A stronger SME resilience to corruption risks.
• A more transparent, rules-based business environment.
• Increased trust between the private sector, the state, and society.
• Better alignment with EU accession expectations.
• Contribution to a long-term culture of integrity in North Macedonia.
