Democracy and fundamental rights

The EU is a community of shared values and laws. Democracy, equality, justice… and respect for fundamental rights and freedoms are the cornerstones of the EU project. The same values and conditions apply to aspiring EU members.

That’s why the EU supports its Western Balkan partners in implementing reforms to strengthen and improve their democratic institutions and justice systems. This goes hand-in-hand with support for civil society, independent media and protecting human rights.
