From 1-2 December, YEAs Bjant Çami, Edlira Dibrani and Ramanda Shehu represented the Young European Ambassadors network at the EU Clean Air Forum, a milestone event organized at the World Conference Center Bonn, which brought together EU policymakers, scientists, civil society representatives, industry experts, and youth advocates to discuss progress and challenges in improving air quality across Europe.
This year’s forum was significantly important, because it took place during the review of major EU legislation such as the Ambient Air Quality Directive and the National Emission Reduction Commitments Directive. During two days, YEAs took an active role and directly contributed to the high-level discussions focused on the EU’s strategic priorities for clean air and environmental protection.
For them one of the highlights was the “Earth Observation and Clean Air” session, which showcased the role of Copernicus satellites (Sentinel-4 and Sentinel-5) in monitoring pollutants, atmospheric composition, and trace gases. Another standout moment was the discussion on artificial intelligence and machine learning for air quality, which explored how advanced modeling, forecasting, and data-driven tools enhance air-quality assessment.
Besides the insightful learning sessions, this forum was a space for YEAs to connect with other peers, policy experts and environmental researchers, working on air quality and climate innovation projects. They described these exchanges as highly valuable in creating opportunities for future cross-border cooperation and engagement in environmental campaigns.
Inspired by these interactive encounters, YEAs highlighted that the active participation of young people in Europe’s environmental agenda is crucial for sustainable progress and community mobilization. They emphasized that this experience inspired and filled them with motivation, to translate the forum’s outcomes into concrete action within their local communities, while fostering stronger partnerships and regional cooperation.
