Climathon Sarajevo sparks bold ideas for a greener future

On October 20th, the second edition of Climathon Sarajevo turned the vibrant walls of Tershouse and the city of Sarajevo into a lively space filled with innovation, sustainability, and creative energy.

After the success of last year’s edition, this year brought together an even broader community of young innovators, entrepreneurs, and eco-dreamers eager to take on real environmental challenges with fresh ideas and determination. Throughout the event, the atmosphere pulsed with inspiring conversations, networking, and passionate pitching, all of which reinforced that Sarajevo, and Bosnia and Herzegovina, are home to a generation ready to lead the green transition.

Teams competed across three categories, each offering impressive and forward-thinking solutions. In the Food Waste category, Biodesign stood out for its imaginative approach to transforming organic waste into materials that are both functional and aesthetically appealing. The Green Tech category highlighted GreenMate AI, a digital platform designed to help small and medium-sized enterprises align with EU sustainability and ESG standards, preparing them for the evolving demands of the European market. Meanwhile, in the Next Green Initiative to Look Out For category, a team of innovative young women presented PM 2.5 TRAP, a filter designed for chimneys that reduces air pollution and improves air quality

The Young European Ambassadors once again played an essential role in making the Climathon a space where ideas met action. Acting as mentors, speakers, and motivators, YEAs encouraged teams to think critically and collaborate boldly. Through insights shared by Emina Pašanović and Mia Selena Lerch, participants were introduced to the worlds of green entrepreneurship and youth activism. With the involvement of  YEAs from Albania, North Macedonia, and Serbia, Esti Piranej, Antonio Grujevski, and Katarina Stojanovic, alongside organizer Ena Porča, the event underscored the importance of youth leadership in shaping sustainable cities and connecting European values with local innovation across the Western Balkans.

Their efforts highlighted that the green transition is not merely a concept, it is a collective mission driven by the next generation.
