Painting Emotions: An Art Therapy Workshop in Sarajevo

On August 14, 2025, the Europe House in Sarajevo opened its doors to a very special kind of workshop. Led by YEA Azra Mehmedović, the “My Emotions in Colors” art therapy session offered young people a safe and supportive space to reflect, express, and connect – not through words, but through creativity.

To set the tone, Azra began by introducing safe space guidelines, reminding everyone that the session was free from judgment and full of support. A short breathing and mindfulness exercise followed, helping participants to ground themselves before diving into the creative process.

The main activity, titled “Map of My Emotions,” invited participants to translate their current emotional states onto paper using colors and shapes. What emerged were not just drawings, but deeply personal reflections of inner worlds. Once the artworks were complete, the group gathered to share and reflect together, discovering that emotions can be understood and connected through the language of art.

The session closed with “A Message to Myself,” an exercise that encouraged participants to leave with a note of encouragement or reflection – a reminder that creativity can also be a tool of self-care.

The atmosphere throughout was relaxed and supportive, with participants actively engaging in every step. Many shared their satisfaction with the experience and expressed an interest in attending similar workshops in the future.

By the end of the afternoon, it was clear that “My Emotions in Colors” had achieved its goal: offering young people the chance to process their emotions in a healthy, creative way, while strengthening connections with themselves and others. With such positive feedback, the hope is that more workshops like this will follow – giving even more young people the chance to find their emotions in colors.
