YEAs Jovana Jacivomic and Kleidi Memo joined a series of engaging activities designed to deepen understanding of Italy’s political system and the European Union. For them, the highlight of the first day was the high-level conference titled “Rethinking Europe: Enlargement, Democracy and Political Responsibility,” hosted by the College of Europe Alumni Association of Italy with support from the Italian Senate.
The conference brought together prominent voices to discuss the challenges and future of EU Enlargement in the Western Balkans. Opening remarks by Teona Lavrelashvili emphasized that enlargement is not just a policy issue, but also a political and ethical responsibility. Distinguished speakers, including Professor Lea Ypi and Senators Tatjana Rojc and Cinzia Pellegrino, also shared valuable insights, highlighting the interconnected nature of EU reform and enlargement, the strategic importance of the Western Balkans, and the need for strong commitment to reforms and rule of law.
Beyond the conference, the experience included a visit to the Europa Experience dedicated to David Sassoli, as well as a private tour of the Italian Senate organized for the participants. These moments offered a closer look at European institutions and their functioning. Overall, the event proved to be an insightful and enriching journey, strengthening participants’ understanding of EU Enlargement and inspiring continued engagement in shaping the future of Europe.
