What if an old T-shirt could become something new, useful, and symbolic of change? That question guided the workshop “Napravi od stare majice novi ceker” (Turn an old T-shirt into a new tote bag), organized by our YEA Tesnim Karišik in Sarajevo.
The initiative brought together nine participants in a cozy setting where sustainability met creativity. The afternoon began with introductions and light conversation to set a relaxed tone. To spark curiosity and reflection, Tesnim prepared an eco-quiz with ten questions on ecology and sustainability. A small symbolic prize for the winner added an element of fun while highlighting the importance of environmental knowledge.
The heart of the workshop was a hands-on activity: learning how to turn old T-shirts into tote bags using a simple no-sew method. Step by step, participants cut, tied, and reshaped their clothes into practical bags, each one unique. Alongside the crafting, there was plenty of laughter, coffee, and juice, creating a warm atmosphere where people shared stories and ideas.
For Tesnim, this simple act carried a deeper meaning. Upcycling old clothes wasn’t only about reducing waste, but also about “nošenja promjene” – carrying change, literally and figuratively. The tote bags became symbols of everyday choices that can contribute to a more sustainable future.
The feedback spoke for itself: participants called the workshop fun, creative, and practical. Many said they would happily join again, and even asked to be contacted for future activities. By combining a low-cost, replicable activity with education and community building, the initiative showed how sustainability can be both approachable and enjoyable.
Looking ahead, Tesnim hopes to replicate this workshop in other cities and connect it to broader campaigns on circular fashion and waste reduction.
The Sarajevo workshop proved that with just an old T-shirt, a pair of scissors, and some creativity, it is possible to create something useful while sparking meaningful conversations. Participants went home with more than tote bags – they carried with them a sense of community, empowerment, and the idea that small steps can lead to real change.
