On April 24, 2025, Young European Ambassadors (YEAs) in Montenegro, in collaboration with Women4Cyber Montenegro, marked International Girls in ICT Day 2025 under the theme “Girls in ICT for Inclusive Digital Transformation.” The event, titled “Empowering Women in ICT: Bridging the Digital Divide,” took place at Europe House Podgorica.
International Girls in ICT Day is celebrated globally to encourage young women and girls to pursue studies and careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). This day serves as a reminder of how information and communication technologies (ICT) are key drivers of gender equality and women’s empowerment, offering women and girls around the world new employment and business opportunities.
This year’s event focused on empowering women in the cyber and tech sectors, enhancing the digital skills of youth, and emphasizing the importance of gender inclusivity in the digital transition of the Western Balkans – all topics strongly aligned with the values and priorities of the European Union.
A key part of the event was YEA-led panel discussion The Future is Female (and Digital): Youth Perspectives, moderated by YEA Elif Su Cakmak. The discussion featured inspiring young women from the tech and digital fields, who shared their experiences, challenges, and insights on how young women are shaping the future of technology.
The panelists included Ivana Srećković, Media and Marketing Strategist and YEA alumna, who spoke about the role of digital media in empowering women; Sara Bojanović, Young Cyber Ambassador, who shared her journey in cybersecurity and the significance of women in the sector; Nevena Jovanović, Digital Media and Communications Coordinator at UDG and YEA, who emphasized the importance of youth engagement in the digital space; and Mia Nikčević, Young Cyber Ambassador, who discussed the need for young women to take leadership roles in cybersecurity.
The conversation centered around the role of young women in tech, their innovations in the digital age, and the vital importance of creating a diverse and inclusive digital world. The panelists inspired the audience by challenging norms, encouraging resilience, and leading the way in building inclusive futures in tech.
The event also served as a platform to discuss opportunities for women and girls in ICT and explore ways to bridge the gender gap in the digital space. It highlighted how empowering women in technology not only benefits individuals but contributes to the broader digital transformation of the Western Balkans and beyond.
With the support of the European Union and local partners, this year’s Girls in ICT Day celebration in Montenegro successfully brought attention to the need for gender inclusivity in digital innovation and the tech sector. The Young European Ambassadors and Women4Cyber Montenegro continue to work together to inspire the next generation of women leaders in ICT, striving to build a more inclusive, equal, and innovative digital world.
