YEAs Gather in Tirana to Tackle Hate and Promote Equality

From 2–3 June, Young European Ambassadors (YEAs) from across the Western Balkans gathered in Tirana for a dynamic residential training as part of the initiative Block the Hatred. Share the Love. Organized under the joint action of the European Union and the Council of Europe on Promoting equality and combating racism and intolerance in the Western Balkans, the training aimed to deepen participants’ understanding of discrimination and hate speech, and to empower them to take meaningful action within their communities.

Addressing Urgent Challenges in the Region

The training comes at a time when racism, xenophobia, and intolerance continue to pose serious threats across Europe. According to the Council of Europe’s European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI), individuals and groups- especially ethnic minorities, migrants, and LGBTQ+ people face growing discrimination, exclusion, and harmful rhetoric, both online and offline. In response, this initiative recognizes the vital role young people play in fostering inclusion, tolerance, and equality.

Learning, Sharing, and Planning Action

The two-day event included an introduction to the work of the Council of Europe and the EU in combating discrimination and promoting human rights. Participants explored how racism constitutes a violation of human rights, and engaged in practical activities aimed at understanding and addressing this issue.

YEAs were also introduced to key tools and educational resources such as Compass and Bookmarks, which can be used in their own awareness-raising activities. Through small group sessions, they developed concrete plans for future initiatives, strategizing how best to act as multipliers and advocates in their respective countries.

A Network of Youth Driving Positive Change

The Block the Hatred. Share the Love initiative builds on the original campaign (2020–2023), with a focus on expanding outreach across the region. By equipping YEAs with knowledge, tools, and peer support, the training in Tirana strengthened the capacity of this vibrant youth network to lead the way in challenging stereotypes and fostering respect for diversity.

As they return to their communities, the trained YEAs are ready to take the next steps: sharing their knowledge, raising awareness, and inspiring others to stand against hate and stand up for equality.
