The EU is a community of shared values and laws. Democracy, equality, justice… and respect for fundamental rights and freedoms are the cornerstones of the EU project. The same values and conditions apply to aspiring EU members.
That’s why the EU supports its Western Balkan partners in implementing reforms to strengthen and improve their democratic institutions and justice systems. This goes hand-in-hand with support for civil society, independent media and protecting human rights.
The European Parliament's Sakharov Fellowship offers up to 14 human rights defenders selected from non-EU countries the opportunity to follow a two week intensive training in Brussels and at the Global Campus of Human Rights in Venice. The empowering programme for human rights defenders has been organised annually since 2016 further to an initiative taken by the Sakharov Prize Community at the 25th Anniversary Conference of the Sakharov Prize.
The Local Mid-Term Expert in the field of human rights education will work as part of the implementation team for the European Union grant-funded project “EU Support for Rule of Law” in North Macedonia. The Overall Objective of the project is to strengthen the rule of law in North Macedonia.
