ARTS AND CULTURE, EU INTEGRATION
“I’m Dmitriy Churin, a filmmaker and activist dedicated to peacebuilding and fostering regional integration in the Western Balkans through cultural and arts-related initiatives.
One of my significant contributions is the establishment of the network of film clubs called “New Take,” born out of my background in film theory and activist filmmaking. I view this project as a means to foster intercultural understanding among Western Balkan countries and to provide a platform for questioning the intricate relationship between media and our journey toward creating a more equitable, sustainable, and inclusive region.
The topics explored within the “”New Take”” film clubs range from the role of filmmaking in advancing gender equality to increasing the representation of marginalized communities and challenging prejudice. With support from the Foundation for Environmental Education’s GAIA Fellowship and esteemed scholar and filmmaker Mark Terry, I organized a series of environmental documentary workshops aimed at empowering young people to investigate local environmental issues.
I firmly believe that film is a universal language capable of transcending borders, reconnecting people of diverse backgrounds, nationalities, and identities. Whether amplifying voices addressing our shared environmental challenges or facilitating the exploration of different cultures, film has the power to unite us in our common humanity.”
