YEAs raise youth voices at 2024 Balkan Barometer

On 16 September, six Young European Ambassadors (YEAs) actively participated in the presentation of the 2024 edition of the RCC Balkan Barometer in Tirana. Joined by 50-60 other attendees, they engaged in discussions highlighting the most pressing concerns in the Western Balkans, including the rising cost of living, economic challenges, corruption, and the lack of job opportunities—issues that particularly impact young people.

The findings from the Balkan Barometer revealed that while economic growth remains a priority, many in the region continue to face challenges related to unemployment and the availability of decent job prospects. Youth, in particular, are disproportionately affected, with a significant number expressing concerns about future opportunities in the region. The Barometer showed that young people’s frustration with the job market is growing, especially as businesses struggle to expand and provide new positions in a difficult economic climate.

Throughout the event, YEAs contributed to discussions by sharing their perspectives on the role of young people in addressing these challenges. They emphasised the need for determination, innovation, and perseverance to drive change, both in terms of creating business opportunities and promoting better governance in the region.

In a key moment, YEA Klajdi Kaziu interviewed RCC Secretary General Ms. Majlinda Bregu. Referring to her opening remarks, Klajdi posed the question: “You started today by saying that ‘Hope can feed people.’ How do you see young people in the Western Balkans maintaining belief in the region, and why do you think they should choose to stay here despite the challenges they face?”

Ms. Bregu acknowledged the allure of exploring opportunities abroad but encouraged young people to return to their countries after gaining valuable experience, highlighting the role they can play in driving economic recovery. She remarked, “At the end of the day, there’s nothing like home,” and expressed optimism about the potential for youth to contribute to job creation and innovation in their home countries.

The event underscored the crucial role of youth in shaping the future of the Western Balkans, particularly in business and economic development, through collaboration and active engagement in local initiatives.
