Private sector and human capital

A competitive economy and fair society in the Western Balkans is good for the region and good for Europe. The EU has long supported economic and social development in the Western Balkans yet big gaps between remain. Weak competitiveness, excessive business red-tape, high unemployment, under-investment in education, and social inequalities are just some of the ongoing challenges.

The EU is already behind many initiatives to make the private sector more competitive, help small businesses, invest in research and innovation, and support education and training for young people. But much more is needed – and that’s why the EU is stepping up support with the EIP. With the EIP, we will:

Ambition to action

Take a look at the ‘growth’ projects that will come to life under the EIP investment flagships.

COMPETITIVENESS OF THE PRIVATE SECTOR

  • Increasing support to the private sector under the Western Balkans Investment Framework with 50% dedicated to innovation and green growth
  • Increasing the guarantee supporting investments to strengthen competitiveness of SMEs and job creation, particularly for young people
  • Mobilising assistance for sustainable transformation of agri-food systems and rural development

YOUTH GUARANTEE

  • Putting in place a Youth Guarantee scheme in the Western Balkans in line with the EU Youth Guarantee
  • With EU support, the scheme will help Western Balkans governments ensure that all young people in the region have a chance to work, continue education or undertake an apprenticeship or traineeship within four months of becoming unemployed or leaving formal education
