Working towards Reducing Flood Risks in Bosnia and Herzegovina with EU Assistance

The European Union (EU) is continuously providing aid to Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) in the water management sector, specifically in flood protection. With funding from the EU, a project has been carried out to produce erosion maps for the Federation of BiH and the Brčko District of BiH. Furthermore, complete technical project documentation has been prepared for flood protection infrastructure for prioritized sections in the Sava River Basin and the Adriatic Sea Basin in the Republic of Srpska. The project’s primary objective was to identify areas susceptible to erosion processes, simplify and prioritize determinations, and conduct a better analysis of the costs required to decrease flood risks in BiH.

Thanks to extensive fieldwork, research, and excellent cooperation with local communities, the project has been able to develop the primary plan for regulating the Bosna River in the Modriča and Vukosavlje municipalities, the primary plan for draining Petrovo polje, the primary plan for rehabilitating and reconstructing the canal network in Ivanjsko and Lijevče polje, and the regulation plan for the Drina and Ćehotina rivers in the Foča municipality.

Through this initiative, the European Union is supporting the implementation of the Action Plan for flood protection and water management in BiH, thereby increasing the capacity of the country’s institutions to manage flood risks in accordance with the EU Water Framework Directive and the Flood Directive. The EU has granted €1.45 million for the project “Development of Erosion Maps and Design of Flood Protection Infrastructure in Bosnia and Herzegovina.” The project is part of the EU’s broad support to BiH in the water management sector, specifically in flood protection.
