Additionally, he has participated in and facilitated various projects, completed short-term EVS (European Voluntary Service), and recently been selected to participate in the Swedish Institute Academy for Young Professionals. Ivan is committed to promoting human rights and practicing democracy.
Could you please explain what motivated you to become an activist in the civil society sector during your high school days?
I have always been an active young person, and I was motivated by the belief that change is attainable, but it requires proactive efforts. To bring about change, young people must take action and contribute to building a prosperous society with better living conditions for all members. Moreover, living in a young democracy, in a country that gained independence about 30 years ago, I saw numerous areas that needed improvement and could be worked upon. This further motivated my involvement in the civil society sector.
How did this experience impact your personal and professional development?
I firmly believe that activism not only benefits those in need but also contributes to the personal growth of individuals involved. By assisting the community and society and engaging in volunteering work, one can enhance their CV, develop soft skills, and improve communication abilities. These skills are valuable during university studies and later in professional life. Therefore, I believe that by uplifting others, activists also uplift themselves.
Can you tell us more about your current professional occupation and your professional life?
I have a background in law, having obtained both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in the field. Currently, I serve as the executive director at the European Business Association. This association acts as a chamber of commerce, representing some of the most significant companies operating in North Macedonia, particularly those with European capital. Our main objective is to advocate for the interests of our members while promoting the idea that our member companies conduct business in a European manner. We aim to highlight that companies upholding EU values and best practices are not exclusive to EU countries but also present in the Western Balkan region. Prior to this role, I gained experience working in various law firms and the legal department of the central bank of North Macedonia.
Your journey has also been characterized by an interest in human rights and diplomacy. What motivated you in these areas?
Diplomacy serves as an excellent tool to foster connections between different countries, ideas, and people. Above all, it allows me to promote my own country, its values, and share positive stories. As for my interest in human rights, I consider myself a liberal person, and I firmly believe that there is always room for improvement in the quality of human rights. Ensuring that human rights are not only accessible to us personally but also to individuals residing in smaller towns and rural areas is essential.
As a Young European Ambassador (YEA), what inspired you to join this network, and how has your experience been so far?
Being part of the second generation of Young European Ambassadors (YEA), I made the decision to join this network because I recognized it as a truly unique platform that brings together young, talented individuals from the Western Balkans. The Young European Ambassador network represents a diverse community of young people with differing opinions on various matters, yet united in their shared aspiration for the European Union integration of their respective countries. To me, the Young European Ambassadors network serves as an invaluable tool to bring my country closer to the European Union and to promote EU values and best practices within my own country. Thus far, my experience as a Young European Ambassador has been incredibly rewarding and fulfilling.
