“From words to action: Safe responses to hate speech” is part of the regional initiative “Block the Hatred. Share the Love 2.0”, a joint action of the European Union and the Council of Europe. In Montenegro, YEAs in collaboration with the Council of Europe organized an interactive workshop with young people, to equip them with the necessary knowledge and skills to counter hate speech narratives.
The workshop was facilitated by YEAs Enes Pućurica and Marija Blažević, and combined both theoretical and practical components to ensure a comprehensive learning experience. The theoretical session presented real-life examples of hate speech, with a particular focus on the legal framework of Montenegro and how hate speech is addressed at the national level. Participants actively engaged in discussions, sharing their perspectives and reflecting on the impact that harmful narratives can have on individuals and communities.
The practical session featured two interactive activities. In the first activity, participants positioned themselves according to whether they agreed or disagreed with specific statements, practicing active listening and respectful dialogue while recognising that differing opinions can coexist. The second activity involved group work with case studies, where four groups analysed scenarios and assessed whether they constituted hate speech.
Overall, the workshop provided a safe and inclusive environment where participants felt comfortable expressing their views, building new connections, and strengthening their capacity to respond thoughtfully and responsibly to hate speech in their communities.
