Velimir Milošev
Velimir became engaged in activism in 2017 during his studies in political science when he recognized a profound desire to apply his skills in a practical context, contributing to the advancement of human rights in Serbia. His journey commenced as a volunteer at the Center for Youth Work , where he focused on youth policy and peer education. From 2019 through 2023, Velimir dedicated his efforts to IRIDA, a youth organization, championing the cause of gender equality and the empowerment of young women. In 2020, Velimir assumed the role of a Young European Ambassador, collaborating closely with fellow young advocates across the Western Balkans to promote European opportunities for youth. As a queer individual, the significance of LGBT+ rights advocacy had always resonated with him, but it became an even more pressing concern in response to the escalating hate speech and violence leading up to EuroPride. Since January 2023, Velimir has taken on a pivotal role at the Grupa IZAĐI , where his mission revolves around empowering and mobilizing the community in Vojvodina to advance the cause of LGBT+ rights.
Could you please share more about your involvement in various youth exchanges funded by the EU and what inspired you to participate?
Certainly, I’ve been actively engaged in several youth exchange programs, including Erasmus+, European Solidarity Corps, and others. What truly motivated me to join these initiatives was a strong desire to learn and contribute, especially in a non-formal setting, which I find to be incredibly enriching. Additionally, I was eager to explore Europe, immerse myself in diverse cultures, and connect with remarkable individuals. Over the years, I’ve forged lasting friendships with many of my fellow participants, and we remain in touch even now, several years down the line.
How has this experience impacted your professional development, and what did you gain from it?
Through these experiences, I’ve predominantly honed my soft skills, a priceless asset I believe one can acquire from programs like Erasmus+ and other youth exchanges. My communication skills, in particular, have greatly improved. Moreover, I’ve delved into a wide array of topics, from gender equality and human rights to environmental protection, which isn’t my primary area of interest but has become a valuable part of my knowledge base. Collectively, these experiences have contributed significantly to my growth as an activist and as an individual.
Could you please share some insights into your current professional role and how you're engaged in your professional life?
Certainly, I currently serve as a program coordinator for public advocacy at Grupa IZAĐI, a youth LGBT organization based in Novi Sad. In this role, I’m deeply involved in advocacy efforts aimed at enhancing the well-being of local and national youth. Additionally, I participate in the official youth council of Serbia, where I advocate for the rights of young people from marginalized backgrounds. I’m also actively engaged in the organization of Novi Sad Pride Week, a prominent and impactful event.
What prompted you to pursue this professional path and engage in these specific roles?
During my high school years, I found myself unsure of my future career path. However, I had a clear sense of wanting to create a positive impact on my society and a strong drive to combat injustice whenever I encountered it. I couldn’t simply ignore injustice; it compelled me to take action. When I realized that I could pursue activism as a profession and be remunerated for it, I was truly excited. Admittedly, it’s not without its challenges and can be quite stressful, but the rewards are immeasurable. When I connect with other young individuals from the LGBT community who aren’t yet able to openly express their identities in their societies, they express how significant it is to have someone like me advocating for their rights. Ultimately, it’s deeply fulfilling, bringing a profound sense of happiness as I contribute to my community’s betterment.
You're also actively involved as a Young European Ambassador (YEA). What motivated your decision to join this initiative, and how has the experience been thus far?
In 2020, when the YEA program was launched, I saw it as a remarkable opportunity for both professional growth and regional activism. The prospect of collaborating with peers from across the Western Balkans to improve the lives of young people greatly excited me, driving my choice to become a YEA. Additionally, I recognized the platform’s potential to amplify my activism for human rights, enabling my voice to resonate regionally and gain increased prominence on the national stage. Through collaboration with my fellow YEAs, I discovered the capacity to initiate and lead projects that I hadn’t previously imagined undertaking.
