Digitalisation touches on every aspect of our lives today, from transport to healthcare, education to
shopping. Improving internet access and digital skills is crucial to make sure that no one is left
behind. But with a fragmented digital market, underdeveloped infrastructure, low levels of digital
literacy, digitalisation challenges in the Western Balkans are significant. The EU has been supporting
digital improvements in the region for a number of years.
And in Europe’s “Digital Decade”, we are now stepping up this support to extend the digital
transformation to the Western Balkans. The EIP and the Common Regional Market Action Plan set the
framework. With the EIP, we will:
Deploy ultra-fast broadband infrastructure,
particularly in
rural areas, towards universal access
Lower the costs of roaming
Enhance cyber-security in line with EU standards
Make e-education more accessible so that everyone,
young
and old, can improve their digital skills.
Ambition to action
Take a look at the ‘digital’ projects that will come to life under the EIP
investment
flagships.
DIGITAL INFRASTRUCTURE
Continued roll-out of national broadband infrastructure across the Western Balkans
Setting up secure and efficient data centres
Developing ongoing initiatives such as the ‘Balkan Digital Highway’
Cooperating in digital education to ensure access for everyone, especially disadvantaged groups like Roma
