{"id":685933,"date":"2022-06-30T19:16:33","date_gmt":"2022-06-30T17:16:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/webalkans.eu\/?p=685933"},"modified":"2022-07-05T19:18:05","modified_gmt":"2022-07-05T17:18:05","slug":"eu-funds-technical-assistance-for-the-durres-wastewater-management-project-in-albania","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webalkans.eu\/en\/news\/eu-funds-technical-assistance-for-the-durres-wastewater-management-project-in-albania\/","title":{"rendered":"EU funds technical assistance for the Durr\u00ebs wastewater management project in Albania"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">The Western Balkans Investment Framework (WBIF) technical assistance for the Durr\u00ebs wastewater management project was launched on 25 May in Tirana, in the presence of the main stakeholders, including the Durr\u00ebs Water and Sewerage Utility, the National Agency for Water Supply and Sewerage and Waste Infrastructure, the State Agency for Strategic Programming and Assistance Coordination, and the EU Delegation in Albania, as well as representatives of the WBIF,<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.afd.fr\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">the Agence Fran\u00e7aise de D\u00e9veloppement (AFD)<\/span><\/a><span lang=\"EN-GB\">, and<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wbif.eu\/about\/wbif-contacts\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Infrastructure Project Facility 11<\/span><\/a><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">, <\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">who will implement the project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">The project aims to improve the living and coastal environmental conditions of the 350,000 inhabitants in the Durr\u00ebs region. The project will achieve this aim by separation of the stormwater and sewerage network in the region, reduction of stormwater inflows in the wastewater treatment plant to maximise the wastewater volumes and the biological load of the existing wastewater treatment plant, using it to total capacity, and avoiding bypass during rain. It will improve the quality of surface and underground water bodies in the region and in the Adriatic Sea, thus positively impacting biodiversity (climate change adaptation) and tourism (economic development).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">The wastewater collection networks in Durr\u00ebs city are old, made of concrete pipelines which are prone to infiltration, lacking proper sloping and often becoming subject to blockages. Most of the sewage collection systems are combined, and collect wastewater together with rainwater. Substantial volumes of wastewater flow to the sea result due to poor connection, wastewater infiltration, and overflows during dry and rainy weather.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Through the WBIF, the European Union has provided a technical assistance grant of \u20ac500,000. The estimated total investment cost of the<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wbif.eu\/project-detail\/PRJ-ALB-ENV-030\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Durr\u00ebs Wastewater Management Project\u00a0<\/span><\/a><span lang=\"EN-GB\">is around \u20ac40 million and is planned to be financed through an AFD loan and
