{"id":589302,"date":"2022-05-06T13:23:48","date_gmt":"2022-05-06T11:23:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/webalkans.eu\/?p=589302"},"modified":"2022-05-06T13:23:48","modified_gmt":"2022-05-06T11:23:48","slug":"eu-and-western-balkans-partners-join-forces-to-tackle-disinformation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webalkans.eu\/en\/news\/eu-and-western-balkans-partners-join-forces-to-tackle-disinformation\/","title":{"rendered":"EU and Western Balkans partners join forces to tackle disinformation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On 27 April, the European Commission\u2019s Directorate-General for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Negotiations (DG NEAR) organised a virtual event\u00a0on the\u00a0new geopolitical consequences of disinformation in the Western Balkans,\u00a0with over 95 participants from all Western Balkans partners.\u00a0This Technical Assistance and Information Exchange (TAIEX) event was a joint effort between DG NEAR, the European External Action Service and EU Member States.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the context of the war in Ukraine, Neighbourhood East and Institution Building Director\u00a0Lawrence Meredith\u00a0highlighted the risks of disinformation in undermining democracy and security while acting Director for Western Balkans,\u00a0Michela\u00a0Matuella,\u00a0stressed that freedom of expression and media are key elements of the enlargement process. Acting Director for Thematic Support, Coordination of Policy and Financial Instruments,\u00a0Mathieu\u00a0Bousquet,\u00a0focused on practical solutions to respond to disinformation.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Altogether,\u00a017 speakers from EU Member States and EU institutions\u00a0shared information about the EU\u2019s legislative toolbox and practical case studies as well as concrete tools for countering disinformation. Participants at the event concluded that more efforts are needed to raise awareness and understanding of foreign manipulation tactics, to invest in quality, independent journalism and media literacy, and to support further bilateral or multilateral cooperation to combat disinformation. The\u00a0speed and flexibility of the TAIEX instrument\u00a0was seen as well-suited to support these joint efforts.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On 27 April, the European
