{"id":537851,"date":"2022-03-01T11:49:23","date_gmt":"2022-03-01T10:49:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/webalkans.eu\/?p=537851"},"modified":"2022-03-01T11:49:23","modified_gmt":"2022-03-01T10:49:23","slug":"commissioner-varhelyi-attends-western-balkans-investment-summit-2022","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webalkans.eu\/en\/news\/commissioner-varhelyi-attends-western-balkans-investment-summit-2022\/","title":{"rendered":"Commissioner V\u00e1rhelyi attends Western Balkans Investment Summit 2022"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) yesterday welcomed the European Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement, Oliv\u00e9r V\u00e1rhelyi, and the heads of government of\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebrd.com\/albania.html\">Albania<\/a><\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">,\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebrd.com\/ebrd-in-bosnia-and-herzegovina.html\">Bosnia and Herzegovina<\/a><\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">,\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebrd.com\/kosovo.html\">Kosovo<\/a><\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">,\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebrd.com\/montenegro-country.html\">Montenegro<\/a><\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">,\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebrd.com\/north-macedonia.html\">North Macedonia<\/a><\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebrd.com\/serbia.html\">Serbia<\/a><\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0to its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebrd.com\/news\/events\/western-balkans-investment-summit-2022.html\">Western Balkans Investment Summit 2022<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">The event was opened by\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebrd.com\/who-we-are\/ebrd-president-odile-renaud-basso\">EBRD President Odile Renaud Basso<\/a>, who\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebrd.com\/news\/speeches\/the-ebrd-plays-a-key-role-in-the-western-balkans-.html\">stressed in her speech<\/a>\u00a0that regional cooperation is vital to the economic prospects and political stability of the Western Balkans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">In his address, European Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Oliv\u00e9r V\u00e1rhelyi outlined the<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebrd.com\/who-we-are\/structure-and-management\/shareholders\/european-union.html\">European Union<\/a><\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u2019s plans to increase economic support to the region to \u20ac30 billion in the coming years. Implemented in partnership with institutional and private investors, the financing aims to speed up the region\u2019s social and economic convergence with the EU and is expected to boost its gross domestic product by 3.6%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u201cEurope does not end at Zagreb or Budapest,\u201d Mr V\u00e1rhelyi said. \u201cThe Western Balkans naturally belong here too.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">In their speeches and answers to investors\u2019 questions, the heads of government summarised their investment priorities. All leaders spoke of plans to develop renewable energy sources, which require a regional energy system to balance the inflow of renewables into national grids and, in some countries, a change of legislation to enable large-scale private investment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Today\u2019s event was the fifth EBRD summit of its kind. The inaugural\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebrd.com\/news\/2014\/western-balkans-investment-forum-at-the-ebrd.html\">Western Balkans Summit<\/a><\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\"> which brought together all the region\u2019s prime ministers for the first time,\u00a0took place at EBRD headquarters in London in February
