The first grant under the Western Balkans Investment Framework (\u20ac82.8\u00a0million) was signed in February 2023. The funds will enable the upgrade and modernisation of 230\u00a0km of railway. This will enable travel speeds of up to 200\u00a0km\/h between Belgrade and Ni\u0161, increase trade flows and stimulate economic growth along the route.\n\n&nbsp;\n\n<\/div>\n<div>\n\nThe signing ceremony was attended by Serbia\u2019s Prime Minister Ana Brnabi\u0107, EIB Vice-President Lilyana Pavlova, Minister for European Integration Tanja Mi\u0161\u010devi\u0107, Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure Goran Vesi\u0107, EU Ambassador to Serbia Emanuele Giaufret and representatives of Serbian Railways. This is a flagship project of the Economic and Investment Plan for the Western Balkans, and a Team Europe Initiative. It also benefits from EU technical assistance in preparing documentation that satisfies EU economic, environmental and social safeguards and procurement rules.\n\n&nbsp;\n\n<\/div>\n<div>\n\nThe grant signed is part of an EU financial package of \u20ac2.2\u00a0billion to modernise the Belgrade\u00a0\u2013\u00a0Ni\u0161 railway, encompassing up to \u20ac600\u00a0million in EU grants. It is a clear demonstration of the rapid progress made by Team Europe in funding this flagship railway project. The package also includes a \u20ac1.1\u00a0billion EIB loan and a \u20ac550\u00a0million loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.\n\n&nbsp;\n\n<\/div>\n<div>\n\nIn the last 10 years, the EIB has supported the rail sector with more than \u20ac39\u00a0billion globally, helping to construct or upgrade almost 2\u00a0000\u00a0km of tracks and 304\u00a0stations.
