{"id":3163531,"date":"2021-12-16T15:48:55","date_gmt":"2021-12-16T15:48:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/webalkans.eu\/eu-to-finance-new-wastewater-plant-in-kosovo\/"},"modified":"2026-05-05T15:17:20","modified_gmt":"2026-05-05T15:17:20","slug":"eu-to-finance-new-wastewater-plant-in-kosovo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webalkans.eu\/en\/eu-to-finance-new-wastewater-plant-in-kosovo\/","title":{"rendered":"EU to finance new wastewater plant in Kosovo"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div>\n\n<span lang=\"EN-GB\">The European Union, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), and the European Investment Bank (EIB) \u2013 the lending arm of the EU \u2013 are financing a new wastewater treatment plant in northern<span class=\"apple-converted-space\"> Kosovo <\/span>to improve sanitation standards and reduce wastewater pollution in South Mitrovica, Vushtrri\/ Vu\u010ditrn and the surrounding areas.<\/span>\n\n&nbsp;\n\n<\/div>\n<div>\n\n<span lang=\"EN-GB\">The EU will provide a \u20ac5 million grant through the<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wbif.eu\/\">Western Balkans Investment Framework<\/a><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">(WBIF), The European Investment Bank will co-finance the project with a \u20ac13.5 million loan and the EBRD will extend another\u00a0 \u20ac13.5 million loan to Regional Water Company Mitrovica, a state-owned water utility company, to finance the construction of the new treatment plant, as well as the repair and extension of the wastewater network in South Mitrovica and Vushtrri\/ Vu\u010ditrn. The plant will benefit more than 123,000 people living in the company\u2019s service area.<\/span>\n\n&nbsp;\n\n<\/div>\n<div>\n\n<span lang=\"EN-GB\">The new treatment plant will significantly reduce pollution from wastewater flowing into four of the region\u2019s rivers and will provide residents with access to cleaner water. It will also benefit neighbouring municipalities in Serbia.<\/span>\n\n&nbsp;\n\n<\/div>\n<div>\n\n<span lang=\"EN-GB\">The water quality of Kosovan rivers has deteriorated in recent decades due to a lack of proper treatment for wastewater and solid waste. The EU, EIB and EBRD are helping Kosovo to address these challenges and invest in modern environmental infrastructure with well-structured finance through the Western Balkans Investment Framework.
