Over the past few weeks, investigative journalism has been celebrated in the Western Balkans.\u00a0Professional juries across Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia have gathered to evaluate some of the most compelling investigative journalism pieces.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The latest to announce the winners of the EU Awards for Investigative Journalism was North Macedonia. The jury, comprising Valentin Neshovski, Sonja Delevska, and Ognjen Zori\u0107, awarded Aleksandar Dimitrievski and Mihail Milosevski from 360 stepeni the first prize for their piece <\/span>\u2018Following Julia\u2019s Footsteps\u2019<\/span><\/i>, an investigation exposing abuse of power at the top of national security and revealing how those tasked with upholding the law misused their positions.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The first prize for Investigative Journalism in Albania was awarded to Amfora.al\u2019s Geri Emiri and Erjola Azizolli. Jury members Blerjana Bino, Fatjona Mejdini, and Rashela Shehu recognized the investigation <\/span>\u2018The Resort at Monastery Bay Destroying the Archaeological Potential of Butrint Park\u2019<\/span><\/i>, which exposes how profit-driven projects in Albania\u2019s exclusive coastal zones threaten protected areas and erode cultural heritage. The piece reveals how construction companies secured \u201cstrategic investor\u201d status despite clear UNESCO rule violations and evidence of archaeological treasures in the area.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In Montenegro, jury members Lamija Ale\u010dkovi\u0107, Marijana Camovi\u0107 Veli\u010dkovi\u0107, and Leila Bi\u010dak\u010di\u0107 crowned Tatjana A\u0161anin and Nikola Milosavi\u0107 Aleksi\u0107 as winners for the second year in a row. Their documentary <\/span>\u2018Target: The State of Relatives\u2019<\/span><\/i> \u2014 different in topic from last year\u2019s <\/span>\u2018Murky Waters\u2019<\/span><\/i> yet equally of high public interest \u2014 investigates how relatives of high-ranking state and local officials from ruling parties obtained well-paid public administration jobs after the 2020 elections.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

BIRN\u2019s Aleksa Te\u0161i\u0107 and Sa\u0161a Dragojlo shared the first prize for investigative journalism in Serbia. The jury in Serbia \u2014 comprising Aleksandra Nik\u0161i\u0107, Milka Tadi\u0107 Mijovi\u0107, and Snje\u017eana Milivojevi\u0107 \u2014 awarded Te\u0161i\u0107\u2019s investigation <\/span>\u2018Proven: BIA Hacks Activists\u2019 Phones\u2019<\/span><\/i>, which informs the public about how Serbia\u2019s Security Information Agency (BIA) used Israeli Cellebrite technology to unlock activists\u2019 phones and install domestic spyware. Dragojlo\u2019s <\/span>\u2018From Belgrade to Be\u2019er Sheva: Israeli Military Flights and Million-Euro Weapons Shipments\u2019<\/span><\/i> traced Serbia\u2019s \u20ac23 million arms exports to Israel, uncovering deep-rooted ties in military trade and providing valuable context to the ongoing conflict in Gaza.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In North Macedonia, Saska Cvetkovska, Bojan Stojanovski, Aleksandra Denkovska Gocevska, Trifun Sitnikovski, Aleksandar Janev, and David Ilievski received the second prize for <\/span>\u2018Stolen Lives\u2019<\/span><\/i>, a story uncovering large-scale identity theft and misuse in the fast-loan system. The third prize was awarded to Srgjan Stojancov and Snezana Lupevska Sozen for <\/span>\u2018Krmzov File \u2013 An Epic Crime or an Attempt to Take Away His Business\u2019<\/span><\/i>, a TV investigation that uses one man\u2019s case to show how systemic weaknesses can be exploited for personal gain.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Albania\u2019s Vladimir Karaj and Edmor Hoxhaj shared the second prize for <\/span>\u2018Like Prison: How African Migrant Workers Suffer Exploitation in Albania\u2019<\/span><\/i>, uncovering the exploitation and discrimination faced by African workers. They were also recognized for a piece examining the Independent Qualification Commission (KPK)\u2019s request for a donation from the Kastrati company, exposing how an institution founded to uphold ethics sought sponsorship from a private entity, undermining its own credibility.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Eriza Kryeziu and Esmeralda Keta received the third prize in Albania for their investigation into the exploitation of women in garment factories\u2014a powerful story highlighting urgent and often overlooked social and economic issues.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In Montenegro, the second prize was shared between Jovan Nikitovi\u0107 and Ivan Ivanovi\u0107. Nikitovi\u0107\u2019s series on the reconstruction of the Museum in Bijelo Polje reveals how a long-awaited cultural revitalization turned into a symbol of bureaucratic failure, poor planning, and neglect of heritage \u2014 leaving the museum closed to the public even after four years of work funded by the Ministry of Culture and Media, UNDP, and the Municipality of Bijelo Polje. Meanwhile, <\/span>\u2018Big Brother: Montenegrin Ministry of Interior Acquires Israeli Facial Recognition Software\u2019<\/span><\/i> by Ivanovi\u0107 uncovers how the Ministry purchased advanced AI surveillance technology from Israel\u2019s AnyVision, despite the absence of a clear legal framework regulating the use of biometric data in public spaces.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The third prize in Montenegro was awarded to Dejan Milovac and Lazar Grdini\u0107 for <\/span>\u2018How a Former ANB Operative Acquired Valuable Assets: A Million for Real Estate and Vehicles\u2019<\/span><\/i>, revealing that the family of retired ANB and Police Directorate official Du\u0161ko Golubovi\u0107 acquired real estate and luxury cars worth over one million euros within a decade, raising questions about the origin of wealth and the accountability of former security officials.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The second prize in Serbia was shared between Gordana Andri\u0107, Dragana Prica Kova\u010devi\u0107, and Teodora \u0106ur\u010di\u0107 of BIRN Serbia, and Stefan Markovi\u0107 and Jovana Tomi\u0107 from CINS, for their investigations <\/span>\u2018Domestic Violence Against Children: The Invisible Victims\u2019<\/span><\/i> and the podcast series <\/span>\u2018Traces\u2019<\/span><\/i> \u2014 particularly the season <\/span>\u2018The Pit\u2019<\/span><\/i>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The third prize in Serbia was awarded to Stevan Doj\u010dinovi\u0107, Bojana Jovanovi\u0107, Sofija Paroj\u010di\u0107, and Dragana Pe\u0107o for two investigations: <\/span>\u2018Police Report: Neboj\u0161a Stefanovi\u0107 and Marko Parezanovi\u0107 Aided the \u0160ari\u0107 Clan\u2019<\/span><\/i>, which reveals links between top officials, the judiciary, and organized crime; and <\/span>\u2018Te\u0161i\u0107 Uses SNS \u201cPawns\u201d to Evade Sanctions and Earn Millions of Euros\u2019<\/span><\/i>, which uncovers how political connections enabled a primary arms dealer to circumvent U.S. sanctions.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
