The European Union is providing assistance to the 89 km section from Kumanovo to the Bulgarian border, with plans to complete before the end of the decade.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThe European Union is supporting North Macedonia in developing a functional and modern railway system, which will provide better connectivity, quality of life and increased economic development opportunities for citizens<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Integrating railway connections into North Macedonia\u2019s transport network is one of the European Union&#8217;s priorities, because it will ensure efficient climate-friendly movement for people and freight across the European continent\u201d said David Geer, head of the EU delegation to North Macedonia.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The EU is also financing the segment, which began construction in 2022, from Kumanovo to Beljakovce (31 km), as part of the commitment to electrify the entire line to (Skopje \u2013 Veles \u2013 Beljakovce \u2013 Kumanovo \u2013 border with Bulgaria) to connect with Bulgaria, thereby ensuring a modern and efficient railway network.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThis project will improve the working conditions of the railway employees, provide safer railway services, and it will allow for greater possibility for development and growth of the North Macedonia economy as a whole,\u201d said Finance Minister Fatmir Besimi.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For this pivotal rail route, \u20ac560\u202fmillion has been secured under\u202f<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acc.team-europe-partners.eu\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">the auspices of Team Europe<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. The funds entail a \u20ac175 million loan from\u202f<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eib.org\/projects\/topics\/global\/index\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">EIB Global<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202fand another loan of equal size from the\u202f<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebrd.com\/home\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">European Bank for Reconstruction and Development<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. These loans will be complemented by a \u20ac150 million EU grant through\u202f<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wbif.eu\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">the Western Balkans Investment Framework<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202fand a grant of as much as \u20ac60 million from\u202f<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/neighbourhood-enlargement.ec.europa.eu\/enlargement-policy\/overview-instrument-pre-accession-assistance_en\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">the Instrument for Pre-accession Assistance<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. The project forms part of\u202f<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/commission.europa.eu\/strategy-and-policy\/priorities-2019-2024\/stronger-europe-world\/global-gateway_en\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">the Global Gateway<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, the European Union\u2019s strategy that aims at narrowing the global investment gap for vital infrastructure.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThis is not just a project about railways. It is about transforming North Macedonia\u2019s railway system for the 21st century! Improving competition and enhancing market quality in the railway sector, as part of North Macedonia\u2019s effort to integrate into the wider European green and connectivity agenda,\u201d said J\u00fcrgen Rigterink, First Vice President of the EBRD.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">With a 1873 railway history, North Macedonia is reinforcing sustainability and moving closer toward EU integration, highlighting that indigenous determination plus cooperation
