Yesterday, the Commission is announcing\u00a015 winners\u00a0<\/strong>of the\u00a0New European Bauhaus (NEB) Prizes 2023<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a014 selected projects<\/strong>, benefitting from EUR 65 million of investments from the\u00a0first European Urban Initiative – Innovative Actions call<\/strong>\u00a0under Cohesion policy.<\/strong>\u00a0The Award Ceremony took place\u00a0<\/strong>during the \u2018NEB in Regions and Cities’\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>event<\/a>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>in Brussels with Commissioner\u00a0Ferreira<\/strong>. The list of winners included also a project from Montenegro.<\/p>\n

New European Bauhaus Prizes 2023<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Out of the 61 finalists, 15 winners with exemplary initiatives of the New European Bauhaus will receive a monetary prize of up to \u20ac30,000 and a communication package to help them further develop and promote their projects and concepts.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The third edition of the Prizes received more than 1,400 applications from EU Member States and for the first time, applications for initiatives in the Western Balkans. In the context of the European Year of Skills, the Prizes 2023 also included an additional strand focused on education and learning.<\/p>\n

First EUI \u2013 Innovative Actions laureates\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The\u00a014 laureates\u00a0of the first\u00a0European Urban Initiative \u2013 Innovative Actions<\/a>\u00a0call dedicated to the New European Bauhaus come from varied EU urban contexts, representing 12 EU countries, with a majority of small and medium size cities. The laureates of the first EUI-Innovative actions call are, per priority area:<\/p>\n

-\u2018Construction and renovation in a spirit of circularity and carbon neutrality’: NatUR-W<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(Lorca, Spain) and\u00a0Viana S+T+ARTS Centre<\/em><\/strong>(Viana do Castelo, Portugal);<\/p>\n

-\u2018Preserving and transforming cultural heritage’: ImperfectCity\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>(Aarhus, Denmark) and\u00a0S4T<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>(Rovereto, Italy);<\/p>\n

-\u2018Adapting and transforming buildings for affordable housing solutions’: AHA Budapest<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(Budapest, Hungary),\u00a0Rock the Block<\/em><\/strong>(Egaleo, Greece),\u00a0SHARE<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(Fuenlabrada, Spain) and\u00a0SOFTacademy<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(Tallin, Estonia);<\/p>\n

-\u2018Regenerating urban spaces’: RELAUNCHTOWIN<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(Burgas, Bulgaria),\u00a0Time2Adapt<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>(Lille European Metropolis, France),\u00a0WATSUPS<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(<\/em>Mechelen, Belgium),\u00a0We-Z<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(District III of Rome \u2013 Montesacro, Italy),\u00a0Urban Biodiversity Parks<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(Turku, Finland) and\u00a0InterACT Green<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(Vara\u017edin, Croatia).<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Supported by \u20ac65 million from the European Regional and Development Fund, the winning projects will serve as a new generation of NEB demonstrators in the areas of constructing and renovating in a spirit of circularity and sustainability, preserving and enhancing cultural heritage, adapting and transforming buildings for affordable housing solutions, and regenerating urban spaces.\u00a0Each project will receive up to up to a maximum of \u20ac5 million ERDF co-financing and project implementation should take place within a maximum period of 3,5 years.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The initiative generated strong interest from all over the EU, with 99 applications from 21 EU Member States and 125 urban authorities involved, 76% of which from small and medium size cities (less than 250 000 inhabitants).<\/p>\n

Next steps<\/strong><\/p>\n

In April 2024, the Commission will organise the fourth edition of the New European Bauhaus prizes, in the context of the second edition of the NEB\u00a0Festival<\/a>. Interested organisations and individuals can propose their own activities, projects or satellite events to one of the three calls to become a spotlight feature of The Festival. The calls are open until 15 September.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Background<\/strong><\/p>\n

The New European Bauhaus is a creative and interdisciplinary initiative that connects the\u00a0European Green Deal<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>to our living spaces and experiences. The initiative calls on all Europeans to imagine and build together a sustainable and inclusive future that is beautiful for our eyes, minds, and souls. Launched by President von der Leyen in her\u00a02020 State of the Union address<\/a>, the New European Bauhaus was co-designed with thousands of people and organisations across Europe and beyond. With a dedicated\u00a0ERDF budget of \u20ac450 million, the\u00a0European Urban I<\/a>nitiative is a new instrument supporting the urban dimension of Cohesion Policy in 2021-2027. In the programming period 2021-2027, a\u00a0minimum of 8% of the ERDF resources in each Member State must be invested in priorities and projects selected by cities\u00a0and based on their own sustainable urban development strategies. The EUI aims at supporting cities to test and develop scalable and transferable innovative ideas and to spread the benefits of tested solutions across Europe, including by making use of the funding available to them under Cohesion policy programmes 2021-2027.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
