Blessed with mountains, rivers, plains and sunshine, the Western Balkan region has huge potential for developing green energy.<\/div>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/webalkans.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Energy.webp\" alt=\"\"><\/p>\n<div>Yet, the region is still heavily dependent on ageing coal-fired power plants and suffers from high levels of air pollution. The EU has long been contributing to the clean energy transition in the Western Balkans. Increasing the share of renewables and stepping up energy efficiency brings benefits for health and the environment, while also creating jobs and economic growth.<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/1.2.1-ENERGY-32-1.jpg\" alt=\"\"><\/p>\n<h3>What are the challenges?<\/h3>\n<div>\n<p>In the Western Balkans, coal provides around 70% of the region\u2019s electricity. Albania, with strongly developed hydropower, is a notable exception. As coal emits significant levels of pollutants, air quality across the region is some of the worst in Europe.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This has a direct impact on the environment and people\u2019s health, causing many premature deaths and other chronic illnesses.<\/li>\n<li>Limited domestic resources also increase the dependence of the region for gas supply from countries such as Russia.<\/li>\n<li>Much of the region\u2019s energy infrastructure is outdated and cross-border energy trade limited. Despite commitments to facilitate energy trade and improve interconnections, the market remains highly fragmented.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Aggregating generation and demand over larger trading regions will make it easier to tap into large-scale renewable energy potential. This will also help to ensure a secure energy supply region-wide.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/1.2.3-ENERGY-30-1.jpg\" alt=\"\"><\/p>\n<h3>How is EU responding?<\/h3>\n<div>\n<p>The EU has been supporting a more connected and cleaner energy market in the Western Balkans for many years. Between 2015 and 2020, the EU provided \u20ac1 billion in grants to energy and transport projects channelled through the<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wbif.eu\/\">Western Balkans Investment Framework (WBIF)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This brought tangible results \u2013 over 650 km of gas pipelines connecting the region with neighbouring EU countries, modernised district heating networks, upgraded electricity transmission lines, and much more.<\/p>\n<p>As part of WBIF, the<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wbif.eu\/\">Regional Energy Efficiency Programme<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>supports SMEs, municipalities, households and citizens in reducing energy consumption, while contributing to regional economic growth. This will bring many benefits, not least in providing alternative sources to traditional coal, lowering emissions and reducing air pollution.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h3>Transition from coal<\/h3>\n<div> \u2013 Decarbonising our energy systems is critical to reach the EU\u2019s long-term strategy of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. This is no less true in the Western Balkans where the EU is helping countries and regions phase away from coal towards a carbon-neutral economy. The initiative <\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h3>Energy efficiency<\/h3>\n<div>\u2013 As the building sector accounts for over 40% of total energy consumption in the Western Balkans, making buildings more energy efficient is key.
